About the project
The site is a hill, and the design uses that rather than flattening it. Retaining walls follow the contours in stepped runs, holding terraces that carry the rest gardens, the smaller shrines and the equestrian statues along the route.
The processional path climbs from the arched gate at the foot of the hill to the main temple at the crown, opening out at intervals into planted courts where visitors can rest. Roof forms and proportions follow the regional temple vocabulary; the pavilions along the way are built to the same language at a smaller scale.
